Playing Pop for Rhyming is fun for the whole family, but it’s also educational! Rhyming develops phonological awareness, a foundational reading skill, so the more kids play, the better!

How to Play Pop for Rhyming

Beginners:

1) Players take turns spinning the spinner to determine how many pieces to pull from the container. 2) Players pull the number of pieces specified on the spinner and say the name of the picture on each piece aloud. 3) If the player can think of a word that rhymes with the name of the picture on the card, they keep the card. If not, the card goes in the discard pile. 4) The first player to collect 10 cards wins, but watch out for POP! cards. Pull one of those cards and lose all of your pieces.

Advanced:

1) Players take turns spinning the spinner to determine how many pieces to pull from the container. 2) Players pull the number of pieces specified on the spinner and say the name of the picture on each piece aloud. 3) If the player can think of a word that rhymes with the name of the picture on the card, they keep the card. If not, the card goes in the discard pile. 4) Watch out for the POP! cards. Pull one of those cards and lose all of your pieces. 5) Continue play until the container is completely empty. Players count their pieces. The player with the most pieces wins the game.

Small World Tales and Legends Expansion Board Game Review

There isn't much to this expansion, just 54 event cards. The cards add a minor variation each turn from a victory point bonus for holding a certain type of region to fairly dramatic changes like forcing everyone into decline. One of the nice aspects of this expansion is that the cards are grouped by type and severity of event and you have the option to create an event deck that is restricted to or remove some types of events. You can start with just the little changes to get a feel for the system before opening it up to all possibilities. If you like the dramatic, you can just build a deck of the big events.

The events can be quite radical and knock a player out of the lead but our group finds them a great addition to the game. It's a good value and a good investment.

Family Business Review

My family, friends and I have been playing this fast-paced, easy-to-learn game for over twenty years and it's always our first choice for company.

Each player gets a "mob" of nine gangsters and a hand of cards that play dastardly tricks on the other guys -- or defend their own guys from attack. Attacked mobsters go on a "Hit List" and can be rescued until a mob war rubs them out.

Throw in special cards that cause double-rate wars, Ambush attacks, turn stealing, and a Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, and the result is a game of surprising strategy and quick reverses, where even a fairly young player can win.

My favorite aspect of this game is its "self leveling" nature. Any player who starts to fall behind becomes a weak target, meaning it's in the stronger players' interest to attack somebody else. People rarely feel picked on (except in fun) and there's no long dusty road to defeat.

Although gameplay can be complicated, the cards all have hints printed on them to remind players what they do, meaning even new players can jump in with gats blazing.

But don't forget your cement overshoes!

[UPDATE 8/09 - Although we still love this game, my family and I are NOT thrilled with the latest edition, which has been redesigned with cluttered graphics and a blocky hard-to-read font that detract from gameplay. Bring back the older (or at least a more legible) verision!!]

I always loved travel bingo as a child. I usually had the type that came with tons of pages and you just marked off what you saw. So the game is just like any other Trivial Pursuit game. Everything is there and all with a Power Rangers theme. However, the questions are the main issue.
