Colorforms Activity Toys Original 60th Anniversary Edition Review

I got this toy for my daughter when she was 2.5 years old. She loved it from the start and still plays with it often six months later. At this age, she doesn't make the type of pictures that older kids would, but she likes arranging the pieces on the floor or on the included boards. When she gets older, I expect that she will like making pictures, too.

Our pieces stick well to the boards. The stick even better to each other, so when you make a pile of pieces when cleaning up, they stay together nicely.

I think any kid that enjoys stickers will have fun with Colorforms. A big advantage that Colorforms have is that you have the option of picking up and moving the shapes. Plus, you don't have to worry about Colorforms being annoyingly stuck to things like furniture and trying to scrape them off.

One good tip I got before buying this set is to NOT discard the extra vinyl between the shapes. You can cut extra shapes from this material - such as crescents (great for smiles on faces), stars, flowers, etc.

The only negative of this toy is that after six months of use, the corners of the boards are looking a bit frayed, but after that much use from a toddler, that is understandable.

Civilization: The Board Game Review

With this board game, you get a very good board game approximation of the Civilization games on the computer and console (Civ Rev on the consoles). If you do not already know what the Civ games are, then you should consider whether you want to invest the time learning and playing the game. If you are an old-school Risk or Axis and Allies player, then you might have what it takes. (Risk is simplistic compared to this.) I have played several games and have taught several players. Many players into lighter board games have not liked it because it is too long (or too "heavy"). I recommend that new players play through until the whole map is displayed, then consider whether they want to re-start (with a new random map). Getting that far will take at least 4 hours if it is their first time to play, especially if you are reading the rules for the first time. Add in another hour if you haven't opened the box and punched out all the pieces. The best reason to approach the game in this way, is that if some players have a tendency to consider their move too much, you can always goad them to do something by reminding them that it is just a practice game.

If you like Civ on the computer already, get it, provided you can find 1 to 3 more players. The game scales well with 2, 3 or 4 players, so don't feel that you need a full 4. (I prefer it with 2, since there is less down-time.)

My two teenage sons are growing up to be wonderful men, but our dinner conversations have degraded over the last several years. Take a small amount of teenage angst mixed with schoolyard humor, testosterone and a couple of irreverent senses of humor and you can paint the picture of what the conversations were like. Half the time they had me laughing so much I couldn't eat, and the rest of the time I was holding my head in my hands in frustration. I didn't want to be overbearing, and I do enjoy their senses of humor, but it was getting where we never had a decent conversation and I was desperate to find something to change the situation.

I can only give this expansion 3/5 stars. Basically, everyone that dies (in the game)comes back for their turn each round. While it's a great idea so if someone dies early they can still play. It doesn't make it more fun, there's no reason to die really. The gold nuggets, characters and equipment that it includes are a fun addition. They do bring some fun items to Bang!
