Product Description

Dragons Collide combines the powers of Light and Dark that will work well with the upcoming Order of Chaos and Galactic Overlord booster sets. It includes powerful Dragons, Lightsworn monsters, and some of the best Light and Dark monsters, all merged into a Dueling juggernaut. Each structure deck contains 37 common cards, 2 ultra rare cards, 1 super rare card, a rulebook, a game mat, and a dueling guide.

Yugioh Structure Deck Dragons Collide SDDC Sealed Review

The deck comes with a lot of great cards that perfectly complement either a light, dark or combo light/dark dragon deck. I incorporated it into my new dragon deck and I was finally able to pull off a win against my friend (who has multiple decks of some of the rarest and strongest cards in the game). A few of the cards aren't very effective though, so this deck is certainly at its best when combined with cards from other structure decks and booster packs (ex. Replace "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon" with "Heavy Storm"). I would also add in a few cards that are good at taking out field spells (or simply add more copies of "Chaos Zone") in case your opponent uses "Necrovalley."

Ticket to ride Nordic countries is a complete board game designed specifically for 2 or 3 players. Ticket To Ride: Nordic Countries Review

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries is the same fun boardgame as the others in this series (don't bother with the dice or card version, however). What makes Nordic Countries different is that it combines and revises some of the more advanced rules from both Ticket to Ride Europe and Ticket to Ride Switzerland Map Expansion. You get ferry and tunnel routes like Europe and the locomotives are only usable on them like Switzerland. Ferry routes all require one or two locomotives to build. Unlike Europe or Switzerland, you can "crush cards" when building ferries by "crushing" 3 of any single color card into a locomotive and some of the ferries require you to use cards of a specific color. Tunnels operate the same as Europe; when you try to build one, flip the top 3 cards from the draw pile over; if any of them are the same color as the route you are trying to build or are locomotives, then you need that many extra cards of that same color and/or locomotives in order to build the tunnel. You also get a new vertical game board and ticket cards, of course, depicting Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland (plus a bit of Russia), as well as a bonus 10 point Globetrotter ticket awarded to the player with the most tickets completed at the end of the game. There is no longest route bonus as in the original game or Europe. The new map has a lot of short routes in the south and long routes in the north (including a 9 train route that is incredibly tough to build since locomotives do not act as wild cards on normal routes in this version). There are several diabolical choke-points up north where you can screw over the other players by cutting them off while other areas in the south (the big cities) have a ton of ways into them. You can expect a real challenge from this map and its new rule tweaks.

Like the out-of-print Switzerland, Nordic Countries is only playable by 2-3 players; if you are playing with 3 people then you can use the double routes just as in 4-5 player versions of the other games in this series. Once again, Days of Wonder delivers a deceptively simple, fun but challenging game sure to provide years of entertainment. Production values are durable, beautiful and excellent as usual except well over half of the tickets are confusing. Many of the vertical destination tickets have names of the cities listed in order of south to north or right to left, which is the reverse of how one would expect to read them, and this takes quite a bit of getting used to (note that the Marklin edition of Ticket to Ride, which also uses a vertical map, does not seem to have this problem with its destination tickets). I suppose the logic behind the decision is that the south is the heavily populated region with more available routes but it comes across to me as an incredibly bad design choice. Usually, big cities are listed first on a ticket so maybe that is part of the logic but it took actively staring at the cards and comparing them to the map to finally see some method to the madness. And it is madness, because every single player I've gamed with was totally confused by the tickets that had the aforementioned issues in game after game. Okay, so maybe Days of Wonder can say it's not a screw-up but a design choice, except the rule is not even applied consistently. A few tickets do not follow it. Another problem, which cannot be played off as a design choice, is that all seven of the tickets leading to Finland's capital of Helsinki erroneously point inland to Lahti, the city directly above it. I'm not happy with the destination tickets; they cause unnecessary confusion and time-wasting in what is otherwise an excellent game. It does does get a little bit easier once you play enough games and familiarize yourself with the foreign names and locations of the cities. Days of Wonder customer service didn't seem to care or even consider the tickets an issue when I contacted them.

Nordic Countries is especially handy for when I can't get 4-5 people to play (so we can use the double routes), but I am taking off one star from my review for the ridiculous ticket confusion. Regardless of the problem, after playing several games of it, I still prefer Ticket to Ride Europe (with the Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride 1912 Expansion) because the locomotives are true wild cards and it adds three stations per player you can place to avoid being cut-off by your opponents. However, there is nothing to stop you from adding the station rules to Nordic Countries or any other edition. In fact, I recommend it if you like your games a bit less cut-throat, although the station colors may not match up depending on which edition you are trying to integrate them into; different editions of the game use different colors for their trains (Nordic uses black, purple and white, for example). I also like the variety of Days of Wonder Ticket To Ride - Marklin which adds passengers for an extra layer of crazy bonus point scoring strategy, although this edition can be a bit fiddly due to the extra rules and probably shouldn't be your introduction to the Ticket To Ride series. The original Ticket to Ride is the simplest version but also the most frustratingly cut-throat unless you also get the Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride 1910 Expansion which gives you a lot more choices on tickets and customizing the rules to suit your group's play style (but it's still probably the most cut-throat edition even with the expansion).

Product Description

Celebrate Halloween with Charlie Brown, Sally, Lucy and Snoopy! Help them dress up in their Halloween costumes and collect candy while Trick or Treating. Next, it's a race through the Pumpkin Patch to reach Linus as he waits for The Great Pumpkin to rise. The first Peanuts® pal to share their candy with Linus wins the game!

Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown Board Game Review

This game was a lot of fun, has a lot of re-play value and is well-suited for young kids AND adults alike. (Seriously...what adult doesn't LOVE the Charlie Brown Halloween Special!?) I've purchased themed games before and usually their game-play elements are very basic in nature. (Think "Candyland"). However, I was pleasantly surprised that this game had more to it that just your typical *be-the-first-to-get-the-to-end* kind of thing.

The object IS to the be the first to return to the pumpkin patch, BUT you have to have at least 5 pieces of candy AND to be in your character's costume to do so. (At first, the costuming part seems kinda pointless, but it keeps you from getting bored with the trick-or-treating aspect because chances are, you will be going around the board more than a few times.)

You start out in plain clothes in the pumpkin patch. You then move to the outer board where you go "trick-or-treating". This is where you have to collect a minimum of five "Candy" Trick-or-Treat cards AND land on your character's costumed space to get in costume. However, it could take several rounds to land on that one space, all the while you're collecting "Trick-or-Treat" cards by landing on "Trick-or-Treat" spaces carefully placed in front of various house illustrations. (My daughter showed lots of enthusiasm yelling "TRICK-OR-TREAT" everytime she landed on one of these spaces...so that was just a bonus.) :)

Trick-or-Treat cards may be either "Candy" cards, "Rocks" cards or "Quarters" cards. If you draw a "Rocks" card, you lose one candy card from your stash. (If your total "Candy" card stash drops below 5, then now you have to go around again until you have at least 5 before you can head back to the Pumpkin Patch.) If you draw a "Quarters" card, you take a candy card from any other player AND get another turn. There's ONE "Invitation" card, and if you're lucky enough to draw that card, you don't have to have the 5 pieces of candy to return to the pumpkin patch. (You DO still have to have your costume on though.) Once you land on you character's corresponding costume space, you them change your playing piece to your character in costume. (Or you could just add the little playing piece to your stash if you choose.)

So it's quite fun to play, and just when you think it's getting a little monotonous, all of a sudden someone's luck will drastically change and the race back to the pumpkin patch begins. My 5-year old daughter had a LOT of fun playing this, and it's also the first board game where she was actually interested enough to learn the rules and play through to the end properly.

There's a Peanuts Christmas game as well, and it has similarities to how this one plays, but it's different enough to warrant owning as well. So I would recommend that game to anyone that enjoys this game.

I even went as far as picking up some little, PVC Peanuts figures on eBay to use instead of the cardboard playing pieces....because, well...I'm a nerd that way. :p

All in all, the best part of this game is that it gets you in that holiday mood, which is (in my humble opinion) a HUGE success because that was the entire purpose of the Peanut's holiday specials! So to the designers, BRAVO! Also, it was a great low price! :)

Product Description

Swish Jr. is an adaptation of the wildly popular Swish for younger players. A Swish is made when two cards (or more) are stacked on top of each other so that the solid shapes fill in the matching shape and color outlines. In order to make a Swish, the cards may be rotated and flipped, but must lay on top of each other in the same direction so that the blue borders on the cards line up. Swish Jr. is loads of fun and develops visual and spatial thinking skills. Learn to move the cards in your mind and you'll be an expert at making Swishes.

Swish Junior Card Game Review

I am a big fan of ThinkFun and have written a number of reviews of their products in the past. I received this product from ThinkFun to provide my opinion of it. Here's what I thought.

My fellow players were my wife and my 5 year old daughter. My wife has a quick mind and together we love playing games like Bejeweld and Tetris where you have to think moves ahead in order to win. With Swish Jr. you have to think moves ahead but you are working in the third dimension, you have to rotate the cards in your head before you even touch them. You also have to know how you are going to complete your swish in your head before you touch the cards. And you have to be right our you can lose a card or your chance at additional points.

So how do two adults compete with one child and make it fair? To make a Swish you can use as few as two cards and as many as nine of them. Just starting out our daughter was the only one allowed to make two card swishes. My wife and I had to make three card and higher swishes. Thinking how three cards work together gives us enough pause in thinking out our own game play to allow our daughter to make her own two card swishes quicker. When we added up our points at the end of the game it was nice to see that these were close and not blowouts. It made for a more fun family experience overall.

Swish Jr is fun and incredible plus it comes with a carrying bag so you can take it on the go anywhere. It is easy to learn and master plus each time you play you learn more techniques and tricks so that you can get better with each time you play the game.

Product Description

The 50 United States of America have traded places so they could see another part of the country. Now they need your help to find their way home! Players are dealt 5 State Cards that they will try to match to the card turned over from the Scramble Card deck. Scramble Cards have clues on them that relate them to other states, such as, a state that touches at least 6 other states or a state that has 4 or more syllables. If a player can match a State Card from their pile to that Scramble Card, they'll slap their State Card and yell out the state's name. That card then goes into their Home Pile, and a new Scramble Card is turned over for the next round. Whoever has collected the most State Cards in their Home Pile by the end of the game, is the winner! This exciting card game is a great way to enrich basic knowledge of U.S. Geography. Players will learn everything from state capitals and nicknames, to the shape and location of each state. Game includes 50 State Cards, 50 Scramble Cards, 4 illustrated maps of the USA (11.5 x 6.5) and game instructions. For 2 - 4 players, ages 8 and up.

Scrambled States of America Game Card Game Review

The Scrambled States of America has been in full tilt use in the home for at least a year. It was one of those impulse purchases made from an "educational" toy store (term used loosely as often times "educational toy store" just means everything costs more money). The box was smaller than the typical game, the colors far more vibrant, and the subject matter relevant in a home with young children trying to find their place in America (let alone the world).

Though the states are advertised as being 'scrambled', rest assured each state is in its proper continental US place with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska which are placed in their proper ocean though boxed in thanks to our American-centered interest here. (In other words, Canada just did not fit on the game board.)

Each state is given not only its own color but also its own personality. Some have goofy eyes, others have big toothy grins, still others wear hats and frowns. Not to worry, frowns, teeth, and goofy eyes are evenly distributed among "red" and "blue" states - this is strictly a non-partisan game.

Playing

Inside this colorful box is found:

(4)four folded maps of the United States, labeled with state name, each state in its own color. Folded maps are slick paper.

(2)two decks of cards - one for each of the fifty states containing the state name, capital name, and state nickname

The second deck of cards includes the gears for game play with various tasks each player will work at completing first. For instance, one card may say "state is east of Kansas", another "state is brown", yet again "state name has three syllables". Each deck is of typical card-stock paper, equal in size to a typical deck of playing cards.

Players begin with their own cache of states and take turns flipping over a playing card, competing to find a state in their own pile which meets the requirements laid out. First player to announce their state wins the round. Play continues until all state cards have been played with the victor having the most won state cards in his or her possession.

State Savvy

The playing objective having been shared in a nutshell, the learning objectives may now be rather clear. Play this game a few times and you'll know the names of the fifty states, play a few more times and you'll have a general feel for state location. Play this game a few times a week for a year (sigh) and you'll know name, location, capital and nickname of fifty states as well as possess a very good idea of which states are "neighbors" to one another.

While the manufacturer recommends this game for ages 8 and up - an appropriate age if independent reading is required - game play can be slightly adjusted to allow for a much younger player. Certainly going down to age 7 is fine, we've played younger so that our preschooler can play if she has a reader assisting her.

Our family strongly recommends this game - from this mommy down to the youngest player. It's fun, can get quite loud (always a good selling feature around here), and unscrambles the fifty states into easily remembered (and quite unique) pieces of America. The only downside involves paper maps which may start to tear at the folds after repeated folding and unfolding, certainly a downside worth overlooking
