Chrononauts Review

"Chrononauts" is another card game by the creators of "Fluxx." The general premise is that you're a time traveler from an alternate timeline (not the history we know, but some alternate history) who has to return home.

You play on an 8 x 4 grid of cards that represents the "timeline." Each card in the grid shows a historical event like the JFK assassination or the Lincoln assassination. As the game progresses, players play cards that "alter" the timeline - for example, if JFK was just injured, but wasn't actually assassinated, that would have a ripple effect on events further down the timeline and might create paradoxes.

While the timeline is getting altered, players can also play "artifacts" which represent the player visiting a given point of history and stealing something historically significant, like the Mona Lisa.

You can win the game by either changing the timeline to match the alternate history you come from or by retrieving a specific target set of artifacts. Everyone loses if too many paradoxes are created in the timeline.

The game takes a little bit to get into because, while the rules are simple, it's not immediately clear how the timeline "ripple effects" work. You'll figure it out soon enough by playing the game, but it might take a few turns before it truly clicks. It might be good to play the first game with everyone just showing their cards to the group so folks can help each other through. Once you figure it out, start over and play "for real."

The educational aspect of this game is in the historical timeline. If you've got people unfamiliar with some of the events or why changing this event might alter the course of history and affect that event, it can bring up some interesting conversation. For kids, it might get them interested in finding out more about those events. That said, it isn't a history lesson itself - there's not, like, a bunch of details about the events, just general chronology.

Once you figure out the gameplay and the strategy, it gets to be a pretty competitive and fun game. It's easy to set up and doesn't take a ton of room. The product description says it takes 20 - 45 minutes to play, but the first time through it took closer to an hour because we were working through all the ins-and-outs of play. I think you could probably get it close to the 40 minute range, but unless cards fell exactly right, I don't know that I'd count on a 20 minute game.

This is a relatively fun game, and if you are a fan of trivial pursuit, you may find it amusing.

However, they added a few things in to make this a card game that really ruined it in my opinion. First, there are Steal, Double Steal, and Block cards. These allow you to take cards from other players (the cards that would represent the colored wedges in the board game). Since you take out the wedge cards to represent which categories you have "won", if you are playing with more than two people, you get to the point where you have to reshuffle the remaining cards (and you always have at least 5 cards in your hand, which takes even more cards out).

Once this reshuffle happens, you tend to end up with mostly Steals and Double Steals. This means that the game is often won because of these cards - not because of skill. Case in point: my husband and I played with our 5 year old (who answered only one question correctly, with a lot of help), and he ended up winning because of the Steal Cards.

My other gripe (and this applies to all Trivial Pursuit games) is that often, the questions on the cards seem to bear NO relation to the category they are in.

If you play this game, as we are doing from now on, I would recommend removing some, if not all, of the Steal, Double Steal, and Block cards.

Boo-opoly Board Game Review

The Boo-opoly game is one our grandkids love to play as Halloween approaches. We bought the game last year along with the I Spy Spooky Night Search and Find Book as Halloween entertainment. They like creeping around the board trying to collect enough Haunted Houses to be able to trade them for a Full Moon Hotel. Winning a pumpkin carving contest is a treat while having to pay Fright Fees and having Bats in your Belfry are tricks nobody wants to win. In a kid's Trick or Treat world both the game and the book are definitely 'enjoyable treats' and, surprisingly, 'monstrously entertaining' for all ages. ~ Mrs. B

Find It Games Zoo Version - Yellow Ends Review

If you can't afford to buy more than one Find It game, and you're buying it for someone under 12 years old, buy the Kid's one with the red ends. I work with children and they love these, but my experience is they have more problems discerning what the animal is in this Zoo one. They have no problem labeling the items in the kid' one. Also, I like that the kid's Find It has the entire alphabet in it. My kids like that they can find ALL of the alphabet and check them ALL off on the checklist, even though they can't find the penny. Gives them a sense of accomplishment. Well, now I'm off to buy the Sports one.
