Magic: the Gathering - Lingering Souls (12) - Dark Ascension Review

"I have lingered in the cloisters
Of the Northern Wing at night,
As the sky unclasped its oysters
On the midnight pearls of light;
For the long remorseless shadows
Chilled me with exquisite fear."

- Mervyn Peake, "Linger now with me, thou Beauty"

Sometimes Wizards prints amazing cards with terrible names (Thragtusk) and sometimes they print amazing cards with amazing names, such as this one. This card is meant to evoke beauty and fear, as is appropriate for a card with both black and white casting costs. Beauty, because it's an elegant and balanced design. Fear, because it's terrifying to play against.

There is never a situation where you don't want this card in your hand. When you're on offense, four fliers on turn 4 will race even the most aggressive decks. When you're on defense, four fliers will block almost anything. And the card is resilient to countermagic, because unless your opponent is packing dissipate or syncopate, they'll need two counterspells to prevent you from haunting them. Even board sweepers such as Wrath of God are terrible against Lingering souls. Just play lingering souls, boost the souls to 2/2 or more with a card like Intangible Virtue, and flash the spell back after forcing your opponent to sweep the board.

When should you play this card? You should play this card if your deck has access to both white and black mana, end of story, and if your deck can't access both black and white mana, you should consider adding them. The most dominant deck in Modern recently became even more dominant by adding white mana via Deathrite Shaman, *solely* so it could play Lingering Souls.

Play Lingering Souls, and bear witness as your ghosts chill opponents with exquisite fear.
