Dismember is a great kill spell that doesn't have the text "destroy target creature". It instead gives a target creature -5/-5 to its power and toughness, which could easily kill many creatures on a player's board. This card is also unique in that it uses a mechanic known as 'Phyrexian mana', where instead of paying for each of the noted colored mana (in this case black), a player may instead pay two life per mana, effectively making the cast a single mana of any color (if you have four life) instead of one and two black mana.

This is also playable at Instant speed, which means you can cast it at almost any time, including your opponent's battle phase.
