This game was a lot of fun, has a lot of re-play value and is well-suited for young kids AND adults alike. (Seriously...what adult doesn't LOVE the Charlie Brown Halloween Special!?) I've purchased themed games before and usually their game-play elements are very basic in nature. (Think "Candyland"). However, I was pleasantly surprised that this game had more to it that just your typical *be-the-first-to-get-the-to-end* kind of thing. The object IS to the be the first to return to the pumpkin patch, BUT you have to have at least 5 pieces of candy AND to be in your character's costume to do so. (At first, the costuming part seems kinda pointless, but it keeps you from getting bored with the trick-or-treating aspect because chances are, you will be going around the board more than a few times.)
You start out in plain clothes in the pumpkin patch. You then move to the outer board where you go "trick-or-treating". This is where you have to collect a minimum of five "Candy" Trick-or-Treat cards AND land on your character's costumed space to get in costume. However, it could take several rounds to land on that one space, all the while you're collecting "Trick-or-Treat" cards by landing on "Trick-or-Treat" spaces carefully placed in front of various house illustrations. (My daughter showed lots of enthusiasm yelling "TRICK-OR-TREAT" everytime she landed on one of these spaces...so that was just a bonus.) :)
Trick-or-Treat cards may be either "Candy" cards, "Rocks" cards or "Quarters" cards. If you draw a "Rocks" card, you lose one candy card from your stash. (If your total "Candy" card stash drops below 5, then now you have to go around again until you have at least 5 before you can head back to the Pumpkin Patch.) If you draw a "Quarters" card, you take a candy card from any other player AND get another turn. There's ONE "Invitation" card, and if you're lucky enough to draw that card, you don't have to have the 5 pieces of candy to return to the pumpkin patch. (You DO still have to have your costume on though.) Once you land on you character's corresponding costume space, you them change your playing piece to your character in costume. (Or you could just add the little playing piece to your stash if you choose.)
So it's quite fun to play, and just when you think it's getting a little monotonous, all of a sudden someone's luck will drastically change and the race back to the pumpkin patch begins. My 5-year old daughter had a LOT of fun playing this, and it's also the first board game where she was actually interested enough to learn the rules and play through to the end properly.
There's a Peanuts Christmas game as well, and it has similarities to how this one plays, but it's different enough to warrant owning as well. So I would recommend that game to anyone that enjoys this game.
I even went as far as picking up some little, PVC Peanuts figures on eBay to use instead of the cardboard playing pieces....because, well...I'm a nerd that way. :p
All in all, the best part of this game is that it gets you in that holiday mood, which is (in my humble opinion) a HUGE success because that was the entire purpose of the Peanut's holiday specials! So to the designers, BRAVO! Also, it was a great low price! :)
