Libertalia Board Game Review

It's another Monday for a working buccaneer. Looks like slim pickings on the ship: a Spanish officer out for blood, a few barrels of beer, and some cursed masks. You send in your Barkeep. He won't get first pick of the loot, but he'll be free to open up the tavern tonight and give you a cut. There's always tomorrow, and you have to make the tough calls if you want to found a pirate's paradise: Libertalia...

In Libertalia, two to six players scheme to earn the most doubloons. Players have pirate crews represented by cards, and for 3 weeks, 6 days a week, choose pirates to send out to collect booty. Each player picks from the same crew members, but tends to play differently. Booty is revealed a week at a time, so planning ahead is key to success.

Pirates are played face down, then revealed together and put on the day's pirate ship in rank order. Each pirate has a unique ability and rank. For instance, the Beggar is of rank 3 (out of 30) and takes 3 doubloons from the highest-rank pirate played that day. Pirates of low rank execute their abilities earlier, while pirates of high rank are last to act, but first to collect treasure. Pirates, and thus players, often interact with each other. Expect shocking reveals, triumphs of foresight, and furious recalculations when things go wrong.

This is a very solid, tight design. It's highly interactive and balanced, so outwitting your opponents is key. The rules are easy to pick up, and doubloons focus the game sharply. The pirate theme is light, but well-done.

Playtime is roughly an hour. All players think and play in parallel, so adding a player doesn't slow things down.

Replayability is immense. In each week you'll have six days of treasure, chosen from dozens of booty tiles, and nine pirates to play, chosen from decks of thirty. You'll never play the same game twice.

There are two minor negatives, but there are workarounds. First, doubloons fly around in the insert. Use your own bags to hold them. Second, when two players play the same pirate, a tiebreak is necessary to determine the order they act and loot. The game provides a tiebreaking scheme which is unbalanced, where some cards win and lose ties more than others. Instead, roll a die to break ties randomly.

In sum, it's our group's game of the year, not to be missed.
