Magic: the Gathering - Huntmaster of the Fells // Ravager of the Fells (140) - Dark Ascension Review
This card gets a special mention for many reasons. First, the Huntmaster is the woodcutter from Little Red Riding Hood. Yes, every character in Little Red Riding Hood is a werewolf in Dark Ascension: Scorned Villager is Red Riding Hood, Lambholdt Elder is the grandma, and they're all (partially) the big bad wolf. To top it off, the set has a land card called Grim (Grimm) Backwoods, so this card would score 4/5 on its literary merits alone.Second, this card is responsible for one of the most exciting Pro Tour games in history. Before Brian Kibler used the card, nobody was quite sure how good it was, but Kibler's deck not only surpassed expectations, it won the Pro Tour, and Huntmaster was a big part of its success.
In fact, Hunmaster of the Fells had more constructed impact than any other card in Dark Ascension, even though it isn't a very good finisher. Did Brian Kibler's deck plan to win with Huntmaster? No, Huntmaster didn't *need* to win the game. The Huntmaster was there to prolong the game, to eat the opponent's best removal spells and board sweepers. That way, when Kibler landed a titan, the opponent was too spent to deal with it.
So, do you want this card? You do, but you might not know it. It's not grave titan, or Griselbrand, or a giant angel. It's not the card that will win you the game single-handedly. It's the card that eats a Dreadbore or Oblivion Ring or Supreme Verdict on turn 4, and leaves you just a tiny bit ahead with 2 life and a wolf. In short, it's the card that helps you not lose the game. You need cards to help you not lose, and Huntmaster is one of the best.
