Viper Dartboard Backboard Review

This thing looks great mounted on the wall of my den. I actually purchased it elsewhere for cheaper, and got the matching dart display holder and scoreboard pieces as well (search for "Viper Championship Dart Set").

First, I would like to express that I have had zero (0) darts bounce out/off of the backboard. Unlike the other reviewers, every single dart that has hit the backboard has stuck, and stayed stuck until physically removed (i.e. they weren't barely hanging in there). So I'm not sure if Viper changed their design to remedy this supposed problem, but I have yet to experience it. I know it isn't just a case of throwing the darts hard enough to stick, as the majority of the backboard hits come from my girlfriend who throws pretty slow. The darts strike through the felt and padding, and penetrate the wood underneath just enough to stick solidly. No complaints here.

I only have 2 complaints with this backboard:

The first issue that I encountered is the hanging mechanism. The backboard I received came with two hanging hooks (the kind you might see on the back of a large framed poster or picture: triangle shaped loops that hang on an exposed nail/screw). This is how I mounted the board.....but I would advise against it. If you do, every time you pull a dart from the bottom half of the dartboard, the backboard will swing/lift off of the wall (the dart acting as a handle almost). Ideally, I would have mounted it by using 2 screws on the vertical centerline, directly through the felt into a wall stud. This way, the board is more securely anchored to the wall by going into the stud, and the screws will be hidden by the dartboard anyway. But since I had already drilled the holes for the hanging screws (and installed drywall anchors), I did not want to leave any additional holes in the wall so I ended up buying some 3M double-sided poster hanging strips, and using them on the bottom portion of the backboard to secure it to the wall, thus eliminating the movement caused by removing darts.

The 2nd issue deals with the pre-drilled holes for the dartboard mount in the center. There are 2 holes drilled completely through the felt and wood. There is a dartboard mounting bracket and two ~10mm long screws to attach the bracket to the board using the pre-drilled holes. The problem is that since the pre-drilled holes go completely through the wood, and since they are larger in diameter than the supplied screws, there is really no way to mount the bracket to the board using the included hardware! The screws were too short to penetrate the wall, but not of a large enough diameter to secure into the rear of the backboard. And to make matters worse, a larger diameter screw would simply not work, as the included bracket wouldn't allow it. Here's how I solved this problem: I bought two each of 15mmx20mm screws, 15mm nuts and washers. I slid the screws through the rear of the backboard, placed the mounting bracket on the screws, and used the washers/nuts to tighten the bracket to the board. It seems stable enough. Another (perhaps better-yet) solution would be to just buy longer screws and screw the bracket directly into the wall, but again this means more wall holes.

In the end I am happy with my purchase, even if the installation provided me with a headache and a couple unexpected trips to the hardware store.
