Magic: the Gathering - Sphinx's Revelation (200) - Return to Ravnica Review

Time and time again, I've had my opponent at 4 life, having fought through a supreme verdict and a thragtusk, and at end of turn I hear the fated words: "Sphinx's Revelation." So much for that Brimstone Volley in hand; it might as well be a fluffy bunny volley when they're at seven life instead of four.

Then comes another supreme verdict, and maybe a detention sphere, and then ANOTHER Thragtusk, which is just rude. I asked my opponent where they found so many good cards, and they just smile and say, "a little sphinx told me."

In the interest of full disclosure: if a sphinx you know is friendly enough to give you three cards and three life for 6 mana at instant speed, or four cards and four life for 7 mana, she's being overly forward with you. You'll need to start looking at the next phase of your relationship.

First, make sure your deck has plenty of blue mana, and to a lesser extent white mana. Sphinxes LOVE blue mana. Don't include too many other ways to draw cards; eight draw spells will usually be enough for your deck, as long as your other spells are proactive, take-charge stuff like Thragtusk, Supreme Verdict, or Restoration Angel. After all, you don't want to make her jealous, or worse, start visiting Jace, Architect of Thought on the weekends.

And then? If you're sure your deck is right, if the table is set with a luxuriously printed playmat, if your sleeves are the purest blue Dragonshields (go for the glossy ones), then... that's your moment. Go all the way and add four Sphinx's Revelations.

Trust me, you won't regret it.
