Blood Bowl Team Manager Review

Blood Bowl: Team Manager is a very entertaining game. Once one person gets the rules down, it's easy to teach other players. It takes maybe 15 minutes to explain and you can do it while setting up and running through a first game. The "flavor of the game is excellent. Almost everybody I've taught the game has the reaction of "Wow, this looks cool!" Who doesn't like the idea of dwarves, elves, rat men, and ogres playing an ultraviolent version of football?

The only issues that some gamers might run into is the game's dependence on luck. There is skill and decision making involved in selecting star players, selecting upgrades, choosing what players to play, and choosing what matchups to play on. However, some people won't like that die rolls and the luck of the draw can have a large effect on the game. Ultimately, those who don't take the game too seriously will enjoy it. There's enough strategy that it stimulates the brain and doesn't seem paint-by-numbers but there's enough luck to provide for swings in momentum and entertaining, unpredictable gameplay, which is ultimately for the best.

Note, that this is a game with a slight deckbuilding aspect as opposed to a straight-up deckbuilding game like Ascension or Dominion. It does, however, share some basic game concepts with games such as those and trading card games like Magic: The Gathering.
