EeBoo Obstacles Game Review

Obstacles is a simple, joyful little game that kids can play either alone or with adults. The cards are sturdy and colorful with cute ideas that force you to think --- the big cards are "obstacles" that make up a path. The small cards are "tools" dealt out to the players. The goal is to work cooperatively to think of how the tools can help you get past the obstacle. It is a cooperative game, designed so that the players work together to reach the goal. My kids tend to be competitive, although I can get them enthused for cooperative games with a little guidance; this is far simpler than other cooperative games like Richard Scarry Busy Town (which my kids can play for hours). There are simple ways you can turn this into a competitive game for older kids, such as voting on the "best" tool (a la Apples to Apples). We are working on a variation where we use tools to try to "block" each other and then deal out additional "obstacle" cards to create forked pathways.

Unlike many children's board games, which are boring if not downright grueling for parents to sit through, Obstacles is a genuine good time. Players are forced to be creative and explain their ideas, which is a real joy to watch with kids -- my five year old hopped up and down in sheer joy when she explained how she could use a copper pot to "scoop up" a herd of sheep and get them out of the way. We also discussed serious issues (is it right to "get past" a toll booth without paying?) What a fun exercise in family communication and collaboration!
