As a long time fan of Axis and Allies, OF COURSE I like this version. I've only played it once, with someone who isn't as well versed as me with A&A. The pieces are dramatically cool-looking. Each edition brings more and more authenticity. The sculpts are beautiful. Woeful amount of dice (6) means that you MUST have others, which isn't hard. Likewise for the chips, which are now personalized (they have an A&A logo on them) and have both 5 and 3 vaue, in addition to 1's. But they don't stack with prior chips, which means you will have to combine more sets to get the full amount. The board is bigger, and designed to be more roomy than 1942. The sub and transport rules from Anniversary Edition are there. No tech, no Italy. The factories are now little counters, which are cheaper, but take up less space. The AA Artillery pieces are new to me (I haven't played A&A 1940, because I can't find A&A 1940 Europe for less than $100, which is all I'm willing to pay). Britain starts with a factory in India - that's new. The playability and balance is excellent. All in all, this game is a treat. LOTS of pieces, a BEAUTIFUL, BIG board, and cost cutting everywhere else. The plan, according to Larry Harris, is to have A&A 1941 as the beginner, this set as the moderate, and 1940 Pacific and Europe as the big dog. Not a bad plan, I suppose, but getting anyone other than fans of A&A to shell out this kind of money will be tough. Which is a shame, because it's worth it.
