Product Description
Each player is a traveler crossing the "East sea road", one of the most magnificent roads of Japan. While traveling, players will meet people, taste fine meals, collect beautiful items, discover great panoramas and visit temples and wild places. At the end of the day, when everyone has arrived at the end of the road you'll have to be the most initiated traveler – which means that you'll have to be the one who discovered the most interesting and varied things.Tokaido Board Game Review
I bought this game from Cloudcap Games in East Portland, and based on their input about liking the game, and about it being fun, I purchased it (along with Suburbia). This is a pretty good game and not too difficult to learn. It can be played 2 to 5 players. You travel the Tokaido road (ending at Edo) earning points along the way by stopping at villages to collect souvenirs, having encounters, donating to temples, earning coins, collecting panoramic photographs, and eating expensive meals at the Inns. Some events along the way can possibly help your traveler as well.
After playing my first 2 player game, I realized this game is amazing for what it is. For as simple as it appears, it has a lot of depth and a lot of choices to make along the way. The depth will increase in complexity with more players, because you need to carefully consider your choices based on your powers, what your opponents powers are, how much money you have, how many achievements you and your opponents have, etc. Amazing design! Someone thought this design out very well. You have to concentrate and stay focused or you'll lose your rear end, no doubt about it.
One very nice touch I really like about this game is the fact that you collect everything along the way (in the form of cards) which is essentially your score. So if there's any dispute about who won (or because someone might of made a mistake), you can literally count up your points right off the cards you collected.
PROS:
- Not too hard to learn (watching some videos by Rodney Smith on Board Game Geek made it quicker)
- The board itself can fit on a fairly small table (although it is long, it is thin)
- The theme of the game is pretty neat, and has an oriental feel
- The game is not too long to play, but can increase with more players, or by playing lengthier scenarios
- Mistakes during the game can be fully corrected by counting up collected cards at the end of the game
- For as simple as the game appears on the surface, it has amazing depth when making decisions
- The components fit nicely inside the plastic insert and are held in by the board itself
- The game has style, luck of cards, and plenty of strategic moves if you can think ahead far enough
CONS:
- The point movement pieces are very tiny, so be careful you don't lose one. They are tiny flat round wooden tokens matching your meeple (road walker token)
PLAYER RECOMMENDATION:
- I would recommend this game to anyone who likes a seemingly simplistic game with more depth than what appears on the surface.
- For those who like a challenging game of staying focused with a lot of decisions to make along the way, and one that doesn't take the whole day to play, then this is probably for you.
- I wouldn't recommend it for those who just want a simple no brain game, but if you put it in front of some kids who know the rules, it would still be fun for them.
