This card has helped me almost everytime i've played it. I find that it works good with destroy all creature cards because most the time its not a creature and it leaves you with one creature while your opponent has none.

Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Storm Expansion Board Game Review

Cosmic Storm is the fourth (but not final) expansion to the Cosmic Encounter board game. It is interesting, a few of the aliens have competitive powers, and the space stations variant is yet another deck of cards and more added mayhem.

The game came with:

25 new alien powers
25 corresponding alien flares
10 space station cards
10 corresponding space station pieces

This would be a solid expansion, if it weren't for a few things that really make me hesitate to like it.

-The artwork is not consistent with Cosmic Encounter artwork in the past. I may sound picky for this, but the artwork done on the space station cards and pieces is very cartoony - not like the semi seriousness that the game had before.

-The space station variant is way too unbalanced. When you draw a card, you can get something as amazing as a second alien power, or simply get to choose which planet in your home system that the offense attacks. Since you only get one card you can't pick the strongest (like you can with alien powers). It just ends up overpowering one of the players and screwing over the rest.

-The rules for space stations aren't 100% clear. I've played with them 13 times now, and every single time i've used them there have been disputes on how they work. Disputes that are not really solved by the lacking instructions.

-Most of the 25 alien powers are not playable. By this I mean that if you were dealt a power from CS, a power from CC, and a power from the original game, you would (with a couple exceptions) pick the alien from CC or the original game. Some of the aliens really aren't even meant to be played, but instead were made as jokes and references. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with some of the references that CE has made in the past. However, in the past, they have always been well worked into the game. Smooth. Things like the "It's Full Of Stars..." Hazard and the "Spiff" alien. Or the "Genesis Bomb" Tech. They are all useful and if you don't know what they are from, you wouldn't get them. The new alien called the "Vox" is funny, sure, but it just really isn't CE material.

-The expansion did not include a player color. All three previous ones (Conflict, Incursion, Alliance) have all included a player color. We got Orange, Black, and White. Now we get nothing. I was hoping for brown or something. And not so that we can have a game of 9 people, but simply so that in a game of 8 someone could still use aliens that require a second player color. like "Symbiote".

In my opinion, Cosmic Encounter is the best board game, ever. Cosmic Conflict was great. Cosmic Incursion was awesome. Cosmic Alliance was solid. Cosmic Storm is weak compared to the rest of the game, and I usually don't even include the space stations when I play. I'm holding out hope for the 5th expansion, which is based off of fan aliens and fan ideas.

In Bora Bora, players use dice to perform a variety of actions using careful insight and tactical planning. The heart of the game is its action resolution system in which 5-7 actions are available each round, the exact number depending on the number of players. Each player rolls three dice at the start of the round, then they take turns placing one die at a time on one action. Place a high number on an action, and you'll generally get a better version of that action: more places to build, more choices of people to take, better positioning on the temple track, and so on. Place a low number and you'll get a worse action - but you'll possibly block other players from taking the action at all as in order to take an action you must place a die on it with a lower number than any die already on the action.

Three task tiles on a player's individual game board provide some direction as to what he might want to do, while god tiles allow for special actions and rule-breaking, as gods are wont to do. The player who best watches how the game develops and uses the most effective strategy will prevail.

Bora Bora Strategy Board Game Review

I bought this game to play with my usual board game group. We traditionally play eurogames and favor Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Agricola, etc.

When I opened the box, the first thing I noticed was that the game is visually stunning. The colors are beautiful, and the pictures are intricate and gorgeous.

The second thing I noticed was that there are NO words on the game board. None. While this makes the game easy to market internationally, it can complicate learning the rules.

So, with that said, it is a typical Stefan Feld dice game. If you have played "Castles of Burgundy," then many aspects of "Bora Bora" will seem familiar. Each player gets a mini game board, in addition to the central shared board, and the actions each player can take on his or her turn are based on the numbers rolled on the three dice. There are a lot of "games within the game" and pieces to keep track of, but again, this is pretty typical for Stefan Feld's games and some other eurogames.

Even though this game is beautiful and fun once you learn the rules, learning the game play is non-trivial, even for seasoned board gamers. When three of my friends and I sat down to play for the first time, it was almost a disaster - it took so long to get through the rules that we had a lot of trouble even making it through two rounds (there are six rounds in a full-length game). It was so hard for all of us to try to follow one book of rules that I tried to struggle through the French instructions to help. My recommendation is to have at least one player read through the rules completely ahead of time (there is a PDF version on Board Game Geek) so someone can "lead the way" while everyone else learns along. Once you understand the rules, they make a lot of sense (men with more "tattoos" have more "status," and "shells" are used to make "jewelry"), but getting there can be difficult.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this game to experienced board game players - it might be a bit much for the casual player to start with, but the game is fun, and the set is very well made and beautiful to behold. Just make sure you have enough time on your hands for everyone to learn!
