The goal is to sail around the island of Jamaica as fast as possible, while gathering the goods required: gold for port taxes, powder for naval battles and food to eat while out on the high seas. Each time the pirates meet, they will have to fight to try and steal the contents of each other?s holds (and maybe pawn off a chest full of cursed gold at the same time). And so ... Hoist up the sails and head towards Port-Royal. May the fastest and richest win!

Jamaica Review

Jamaica is a well-produced game built around simple concepts, easy-to-understand rules, and engaging artwork, making it a wonderful game for all kinds of players: kids, couples, and those who want to add something new to their collection.

The premise is simple: a pirate ship race around the island. Along the way, players will capture treasures, enter into combat against other ships, and try to keep their crew well fed. The strategy comes in deciding how to move each turn is in juggling the need to amass gold, food and gunpowder, while not falling too far behind behind in the race. The catch is that each ship has limited storage space, so you'll have some tough choices to make when it's time to decide what to throw overboard. Instead of rolling die and moving accordingly, die rolls set up day and night movements, with pirates deciding strategically how to spend their time -- moving forward or back, or loading one of the cargo types. This is done playing playing one of the beautifully illustrated day/night cards -- you perform one action for the day, and one for the night. It's a simple mechanic, but not a mindless one, making the game easy to learn at all ages, but still an equal challenge for all.

Rules are explained clearly and concisely on one large fold-out sheet, with a variation included for two-players that incorporates a ghost ship. I'd read beforehand that the two-player variation wasn't as enjoyable, but my friend and I found it to be a success. In fact, the ghost ship won the game, which was unexpected and added to the fun.

A terrifically easy game to play that's great fun and beautiful to look at. Highly recommended.
